The Charlie Trotter Culinary Education Foundation

It has long been a goal of Charlie Trotter's to reach out to the community to educate and expose our youth to the great culinary arts in as many ways as possible. To that end we have developed our own not-for-profit organization: The Charlie Trotter Culinary Education Foundation.

The Program has two main priorities: awarding scholarships to students who are seeking careers in the culinary arts and working with Chicago-area youth to promote the enthusiastic quest for education as well as an interest in the cooking and food.

From time to time, we host fund-raising dinners at the restaurant to support The Culinary Education Foundation. Charlie Trotter's restaurant donates the staff and works with purveyors to reduce the costs for these dinners, which allows almost 100% of the money raised to go directly towards scholarships. We award scholarships to several different students each Spring. The scholarship can be used both towards tuition and room and board.

Each of the Culinary Education Foundation dinners fosters camaraderie in the culinary community: Chef Trotter enlists the aid of a chef friend and a winemaker to collaborate with him on a special menu for the evening. Currently, we have raised over $1,000,000 to award to worthy students interested in pursuing the culinary profession.

We also host dinners at the restaurant, three times a week, for high school students from around the Chicago-area. They have the opportunity to tour the restaurant, dine in our studio kitchen and speak directly with many of the key individuals at Charlie Trotter's. The students are learning about different types of foods, organic farming and etiquette.

Our hope is to open the students' minds to new experiences and to show them that, with dedication and focus, anything is possible. During each school-year, we have a wide variety of schools attend the dinners, including: Lincoln Park High School, Providence St. Mel High School, Steinmetz High School, Kennedy-King College, and Chicago Public School Teachers.

This program is inspiring for students, educators, and staff members, as Chef Trotter opens his heart and his kitchen for the community at large. Through the Charlie Trotter Culinary Education Foundation, Chef Trotter promotes passion, determination and excellence in the community. The summer months allow the program to expand, as Charlie Trotter's Restaurant has welcomed local Fire Fighters, volunteers from local women's shelters, Chicago Community Kitchens, and the men and women of the Chicago Police Department.

2009 scholarship application coming soon.
